Blast from the past: My first Crochet Projects

When I was first learning to crochet, all I could make was scarfs. Here are some of my first projects.


This practice swatch was supposed to be a single crochet (turns out I was doing a slip stitch). After losing and adding stitches all over, and trying to figure out why it was so stiff and tight, I gave it up and started over. With the help of several youtube videos, I tried again.
Voila! My first scarf. Though I somehow managed to add stitches to it as I went along, it’s not too shabby. :)
This one came out much better!
After posting these pics to facebook, A friend recommended a wonderful book.  Stitch ‘N Bitch: The Happy Hooker, by Debbie Stoller is essential in learning to crochet. My subsequent scarfs were much better!
Scarf 2: Still looks funky, but my Stepdad wears it everyday!
Scarf 3: Double crochet stitch
Fourth Scarf: Triple crochet stitch
I bought the hat, but I wanted the scarf to match. This one is a shell stitch. .

1 Up Pillow Pattern

I am finally done with the 1 Up Pillow! After seeing this blanket on a different blog, I decided that I wanted to try my own Nintendo project. Now my pillow is not nearly as epic as the blanket, but I am still very proud of it. Making this pillow is a lot easier than it looks. The entire pillow is done using a single crochet stitch and following a graph of the picture. Older Nintendo games translate really well to graph paper, because the graphics were made with very few pixels. Single crochet stitches are very square and sit right on top of each other so each pixel is a stitch.  Here is the graph that I made for this pillow: It is 33 rows tall with 31 stitches in each row. Using a 5.5mm hook with worsted weight acrylic yarn, my pillow came out to be 22X15 inches.  Gauge isn't really important to this project, as long as you use a hook size that goes well with the yarn you are using. Walking Dead Amigurumi - Daryl Dixon

             I love zombies! Zombie books, zombie movies, zombie shows, zombie crafts. Having read most of the comic series The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman , I am very pleased with the show on AMC . Many people dislike when a series deviates from the original plot lines, but I love it. The changes made allow me to continue to be interested and continue to be surprised. One of my favorite changes was adding the character Daryl Dixon . After season two's mid season finale (which inspired my zombie Sophia cat toy ) I can not wait for the show to come back on February 12th!
